What is a dipping?
Teekkari dipping will be organized for the second time in Turku this year. Turku University and Åbo Akademi fuksis, who have earned their teekkari caps, are qualified to bid their farewells to their freshman year in our beloved Aura River! Additionally, older students and alumni also have the chance to purchase a place in the dipping crate. However, they must have the right to bear Turku’s teekkari cap.
The specific location for the dipping is Itäinen Rantakatu 48. There is an area reserved specifically for viewers next to the event area. You can also watch the dipping from the opposite bank and Martinsilta.
Attendees are dipped into the Aura River in a crate with the help of a crane. In order to be allowed to enter the crate, payment must be completed by the due date. You will not be allowed to enter the crate without a completed payment.
The crate has been manufactured with the help of local companies. The crate’s capacity is up to 8 people.
Who is allowed to participate in the dipping?
The dipping is free for Turku University and Åbo Akademi’s first-year technology students, who have been granted the right to bear Turku’s teekkari cap during the last year, and have completed their freshman pass by Wappu Eve (30.4.2023), including Eldprowet.
Additionally, Turku University and Åbo Akademi’s technology students and alumni can purchase a place in the crate, if they have the right to bear Turku’s teekkari cap. The price for one place in the dipping crate is 30 €.
The organizers have the right to deny access to the crate from an intoxicated person.
How does it work?
There are likely hundreds of people to dip, so the schedule will be tight. Therefore, it is extremely important that the dippers are ready when their turn arrives. The crate fits up to eight (8) persons at a time. You can assemble your own group partially or entirely, or sign up alone and let the organizers assemble your group. Everyone from the group must sign up individually and the group has to have a name or a tag. If the tagline is left empty, the organizers will assemble the dipping group. Every group will be assigned a queue number and the order of the queue will be followed precisely. If you are late, you will lose the right to enter the crate. An individual dipping lasts for around 5 minutes, including entering the crate, the lift of the crate, the dipping into Aura River, lifting the crate to the other direction and exiting the crate.
There will be two guarded tents as changing rooms for the dippers. Even though the tents are guarded, the dipper is responsible for their own belongings. Please note that the water in the Aura River will be fairly cold at the beginning of May. The dippers will be provided a change to have a wash.
What will I need?
- Teekkari cap
- Shoes suited for the Aura River, e.g. Crocs (there may be sharp spots at the bottom of the crate)
- Outfit suited for the Aura River, e.g. swim shorts and a t-shirt
- A towel
- A change of clothes (something warm)
What will it cost?
The dipping will cost thirty (30) euros. The payment is made to Teekkarikomissio and the details needed for the payment will be delivered on week 15. Please, make sure while registering that your email address is correct, because you will not be allowed in to the crate without a completed payment.
